Burnout and compassion fatigue

Burnout Therapy in Miami and Online Across Florida

From the outside, your life works. You show up, you deliver and people rely on you. Inside, you are running on fumes: tired in a way that sleep doesn’t fix, short with the people you love and numb at moments that used to matter, like your own birthday dinner.

I’m Isabel Wyss, LMHC, a therapist based in Miami. I work online with adults across Florida who are burned out from work, from caregiving or from helping other people for a living. In therapy we look at what keeps you over-giving and on autopilot, help your nervous system come out of survival mode and rebuild boundaries that hold.

Signs of burnout and compassion fatigue

Burnout builds slowly, so it is easy to miss until your body or your relationships force you to notice. You might recognize some of these:

  • Waking up already tired and dreading the day before it starts
  • Moving through the week on autopilot, getting things done without feeling present for any of it
  • Feeling cynical, detached or irritable about work you once cared about
  • Headaches, a tight neck and shoulders, stomach trouble or getting sick every time you finally slow down
  • Struggling to rest without guilt, or filling every free hour with something useful
  • Feeling numb to other people’s pain, or absorbing it so much that you can’t put it down at night
  • Saying yes to one more request when you have nothing left to give

Compassion fatigue is the kind of burnout that comes from caring for others. It shows up often in nurses, physicians, therapists, teachers, first responders and family caregivers. It usually means you have been caring for a long time without enough care coming back to you.

Who I work with

The people who come to me for burnout tend to be capable and conscientious. They are often successful on the outside while quietly struggling inside. I often work with:

  • High achievers and professionals in demanding careers
  • Healthcare workers, therapists, social workers and others in helping roles
  • Parents and adult children caring for a family member
  • People-pleasers who learned early that being useful kept them safe or loved
  • Leaders and business owners who carry everyone else’s stress

Over-functioning usually started as a smart response to pressure, or to a home where your needs had to wait. Those strategies kept you going for a long time. Now they may be costing more than they give.

How burnout therapy works with me

Rest matters, but a vacation rarely fixes burnout on its own. When your nervous system has been in overdrive for years, it can stay stuck there, or swing into shutdown, even after life gets quieter. My approach, The Return Home Framework, works with the body and with the patterns underneath the exhaustion.

  • Nervous system regulation and somatic tools to help you come out of chronic stress or emotional shutdown
  • Boundaries work: catching the moment you say yes when you mean no, and practicing what to say instead
  • IFS-informed parts work with the driven, perfectionist or caretaking parts of you, so they stop running the show alone
  • ACT and mindfulness to reconnect with what matters to you, apart from what is expected of you
  • EMDR, when older experiences fuel the belief that your worth depends on what you do for others

I have also worked as a primary therapist in addiction treatment and community mental health settings, and as a clinical supervisor in addiction treatment, so I have seen the pressures of helping roles up close.

Online sessions that fit a full schedule

All sessions are by secure, HIPAA-compliant video, so there is no commute and no office to get to. You can join from home, from a private room at work or from a parked car between shifts, provided you’re physically in Florida during the session. For busy people in Miami, skipping the drive across town can be the difference between going to therapy and putting it off again.

I work with adults in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton and across Florida, in English or Spanish. I am available most weekdays and in the evenings.

Therapy isn’t an emergency service. For urgent help at any hour, call or text 988 (the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) or go to the closest emergency department.

Questions about Burnout Therapy

What is the difference between burnout and depression?

They overlap and can look alike: low energy, poor sleep, losing interest. Burnout is usually tied to a specific load, such as work or caregiving, and may ease when that pressure lifts. Depression tends to color all of life, including rest and things you used to enjoy. Sometimes both are present. In our first sessions we look at the full picture together.

What is compassion fatigue?

Compassion fatigue is the emotional and physical exhaustion that can come from caring for people who are suffering. It is common in healthcare, mental health, education, emergency work and family caregiving. You might feel numb, irritable, hopeless or flooded by other people’s pain. Therapy helps you process what you have absorbed, settle your nervous system and set limits so you can keep caring without losing yourself.

Do I need to quit my job to recover from burnout?

Usually not, and that decision is always yours. People often recover while staying in their role by changing how they work, what they say yes to and how they recover each day. Sometimes therapy makes it clear that a bigger change is needed. Either way, we look at your options calmly and without pressure, so any decision comes from a steadier place.

Can therapy help me stop people-pleasing?

Yes. People-pleasing often began as a way to stay safe, keep the peace or earn love. In therapy we get curious about that pattern, notice how it shows up in your body and practice small, real-world boundaries. Over time, saying no gets less frightening, and your yes starts to carry weight again because you mean it.

Do you offer evening sessions?

I am available most weekdays and in the evenings. After your free consultation you can see open times and book through my secure client portal. Because sessions are online by video, you can join from home after work without sitting in traffic first.

How much does burnout therapy cost?

Sessions are 50–60 minutes, and private pay is $175 per session. Insurance options depend on your plan, so ask during your free consultation, which costs nothing and lasts 15 minutes by phone or video. The fees and insurance page has more detail.
