Terapia en español

Spanish-Speaking Therapist in Miami and Online Across Florida

Some things are easier to say in Spanish. Your mother’s sayings, the way your family argued, the word for a feeling that doesn’t translate. Other things you may only have learned to talk about in English, at school or at work.

I’m Isabel Wyss, a Licensed Mental Health Counselor based in Miami. I speak English and Spanish, and I offer online therapy in either language, or a mix of both, to adults anywhere in Florida.

You don’t have to pick one language and stay there. In our sessions you can switch whenever it feels more natural.

Therapy in Spanish, English or both

Language shapes memory. Childhood experiences often come back in the language they happened in, while adult life gets described in another. When you can move between them freely, you don’t have to stop and translate your feelings before you share them.

In sessions, you might:

  • Speak Spanish about family and English about work
  • Reach for the Spanish word because the English one feels flat
  • Start in one language and notice your shoulders drop in the other
  • Mix both in one sentence, the way people in Miami do every day

There’s no right way to do this. We follow whatever helps you feel understood, and you can tell me during your free consultation which language you’d like to start with.

What we can work on

Speaking Spanish in sessions doesn’t change the kind of therapy I offer. I work with adults on:

  • Anxiety, overthinking and a body that won’t settle
  • Trauma and painful memories, including with EMDR and somatic therapy
  • Burnout, people-pleasing and always being the strong one
  • Grief, including grief for a country or a family far away
  • Life transitions, acculturation stress and questions of identity
  • Substance use, recovery and codependency patterns

My approach, which I call The Return Home Framework, draws on EMDR, somatic therapy, IFS-informed parts work, ACT and mindfulness. Alongside the symptoms, we look at their roots: old beliefs, unmet needs and a nervous system that has been on alert for a long time.

Growing up between languages and cultures

If you grew up in a bilingual home, perhaps with parents from Cuba, Venezuela, Colombia, Nicaragua or Spain, you may know what it is to hold two sets of expectations at once.

Maybe you became your parents’ interpreter at medical appointments when you were ten. Maybe you still feel guilty for wanting a different life from the one they pictured for you. You might feel like a bit of an outsider in both cultures, too American at family gatherings and too Latin at work.

These are individual sessions, so the focus is on you and how your family history lives in you now. I don’t offer couples or family therapy. Even so, a lot of our work can be about family: setting boundaries with parents, healing old hurts and choosing which traditions to keep.

I have Swiss and Spanish roots and grew up as an expat in Dubai before moving to Miami in 2015, so I know some of what it means to carry more than one culture. Your story will be different from mine, and I’ll listen for it.

Questions about Therapy in Spanish

Can I switch between Spanish and English during therapy?

Yes. You can speak Spanish, English or a mix of both, and switch whenever it feels natural. A lot of bilingual people find that some memories and feelings come more easily in one language than the other. We follow what helps you feel understood, and you can change your preference at any time.

Do you work with adults from bilingual or immigrant families?

Yes. I work individually with adults who grew up between cultures, including children of immigrants and people who moved to Florida as adults. We can explore family expectations, guilt, identity and belonging. I offer individual therapy only, so I don’t see couples or families together, though your family can be a big part of what we talk about.
