Grief and loss counseling
Grief Counseling in Miami and Online Across Florida
Grief rarely follows the neat stages people talk about. One day you are fine at work, and the next a song in the grocery store undoes you. Some days you feel everything. Other days you feel nothing at all and wonder what is wrong with you.
I’m Isabel Wyss, a Licensed Mental Health Counselor based in Miami. I offer grief counseling by secure video to adults in Miami and across Florida. My clinical work has included supporting people through grief and loss, and I bring a gentle, body-aware approach to it. There is no right way to grieve, and you don’t need to rush.

Grief and loss of all kinds
Grief follows death, and it also follows any loss that changes the shape of your life. Some losses are recognized by everyone. Others are quiet and harder to explain, which can make them lonelier. I support people grieving:
- Losing a parent, a partner, a child, a friend or a pet
- A sudden or traumatic death, or a loss after a long illness
- A divorce, a breakup or the end of a close friendship
- A pregnancy loss, infertility or a future you had pictured
- A home, a country or a culture you left behind
- Health, independence or a career that ended before you were ready
- A family member who is still alive but no longer reachable
- A version of yourself you used to be
Losses like these are sometimes called disenfranchised grief, because the world doesn’t always make room for them. In our sessions, they count.
How grief shows up in the body
Grief is physical. It can feel like a weight on your chest, a lump in your throat or an exhaustion that sleep doesn’t touch. You might notice:
- Trouble sleeping, or sleeping far more than usual
- Changes in appetite, a knot in your stomach or a body that aches
- Brain fog, such as forgetting why you walked into a room
- Waves of anger, guilt or regret that seem to come from nowhere
- Numbness, or feeling detached from the people around you
- Keeping so busy there’s no room to feel it
None of this is a sign you’re grieving the wrong way. Your nervous system is responding to a real loss. Learning to notice these signals, and to let feelings move through instead of pushing them down, is a big part of how grief softens over time.
My approach to grief counseling
I won’t hand you a checklist or push you toward “closure” by a deadline. We go at your pace. As part of The Return Home Framework, I draw on a few approaches depending on what you need:
- Room to tell the story of your loss, and of the person or life you miss, as many times as you need
- Somatic tools to help your body hold strong feelings without becoming overwhelmed
- IFS-informed parts work with the parts of you that feel guilty, angry, frozen or still holding on
- ACT and mindfulness to make room for grief while you keep living your life alongside it
- EMDR, when appropriate, for memories that stay stuck, such as the phone call, the hospital room or the last conversation
I’m trained in EMDR, and I only use it when you feel steady enough and it fits your goals. EMDR leaves the memories, and the love behind them, in place. What it can do is help the most painful moments feel less raw, so you can remember the whole person and the whole life you shared.
What grief counseling sessions look like
- 01Free 15-minute consultationWe talk briefly by phone or video about your loss and what you are hoping for. There is no pressure to share more than you want.
- 02Telling your storyEarly sessions are about understanding what happened, who or what you lost and how grief is showing up in your days.
- 03Finding steadinessWe build simple ways to ground yourself when grief hits hard, at home, at work or on difficult dates like anniversaries and holidays.
- 04Working with what is stuckIf certain memories, regrets or images keep replaying, we work with them directly, using somatic work or EMDR when it fits.
- 05Carrying the loss forwardOver time we look at how you want to remember, what you want to keep and how to live with the loss as part of your life.
Online grief counseling across Florida
Sessions are held by secure, HIPAA-compliant video, and I don’t have an office. You need to be physically in Florida during each session. Grief can make leaving the house hard, and online sessions let you talk from a familiar place, with a blanket, a cup of tea or a photo nearby if you want one.
I work with adults in Miami, Coral Gables, Miami Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton and the rest of the state, in English or Spanish. If your family is spread across countries and time zones, as so many families in Miami are, we can talk about what that means for mourning, travel and saying goodbye from far away.
Therapy isn’t an emergency service. For urgent help at any hour, call or text 988 (the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) or go to the closest emergency department.
Cost and how to begin
Sessions are 50–60 minutes, and private pay is $175 per session. Insurance options depend on your plan, so ask during your free consultation.

Questions about Grief Counseling
How long does grief last?
There is no fixed timeline. Grief usually changes shape over time: the waves come less often and feel less sharp, though anniversaries or small reminders can still bring it back. If months or years have passed and you still feel stuck, numb or unable to function, that is a good reason to reach out. It doesn’t mean you are doing it wrong.
When should I see a grief counselor?
Any time support would help. Some people reach out in the first weeks after a loss. Others come months or years later, when grief they set aside to keep going finally catches up with them. If grief is affecting your sleep, work, relationships or health, or you feel alone with it, a free 15-minute consultation is an easy first step.
Can you help with grief that isn’t about a death?
Yes. Divorce, estrangement, infertility, moving away from your home country, a health diagnosis or the end of a career can all bring real grief. Other people often overlook these losses, which can make them feel lonelier. In therapy we treat them as the real losses they are and give them the time and attention they deserve.
Is EMDR used for grief?
It can be. EMDR may help when specific memories stay stuck, such as how someone died, the moment you heard the news or images from a hospital. I’m trained in EMDR and use it only when it fits your goals and you feel steady enough. Plenty of grief work never needs it, and talking and body-based work help a great deal on their own.
Can I do grief counseling online?
Yes. All of my sessions are held by secure, HIPAA-compliant video for adults who are physically in Florida at the time of the session. Talking about loss from home can feel easier, because you are somewhere familiar and you don’t have to drive anywhere afterward while you are still emotional.
